About Our Hair Loss Treatments

Hair loss is a common medical condition that can affect the scalp and/or other areas of the body. Men and women of any age can experience hair loss, although many people start noticing thinning of their hair in their 30s and 40s.

WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?

There are many different factors that can contribute to hair loss. One of the most common reasons for hair loss is a person’s genetics. While most men with a family history of baldness experience a receding hairline, women may experience hair thinning. Hair loss also typically occurs with aging.

Hair loss can occur as a result of certain medical conditions, like thyroid disease or iron-deficiency anemia. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause may also contribute to hair loss and/or thinning of the hair.

Hair loss is a side effect associated with some medications and supplements used to treat cancer, depression, arthritis, high blood pressure, and heart problems. Other factors that can contribute to hair loss include radiation therapy, weight loss, and stress.

SYMPTOMS OF HAIR LOSS

You may start losing hair suddenly or gradually, depending upon the reason behind it. While some kinds of hair loss are temporary, others are permanent and require treatment. Symptoms may include:

  • Gradual thinning on your scalp
  • Patchy bald spots on your scalp, eyebrows, or beard
  • Sudden hair loss on other parts of the body

While some amount of hair loss occurs naturally with age, sudden and excessive hair loss is a symptom of a serious medical condition. If you notice patchy spots on your scalp or are losing handfuls of hair when you wash it or brush it, you should see an expert dermatologist like Dr. Wang to help find a solution.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR HAIR LOSS

Losing your hair can feel jarring or embarrassing and can cause self-confidence or self-esteem issues. There are multiple treatments available that can help you slow down and/or reverse the hair-loss process.

Several prescription medicines are available to treat hair loss. These include topical medications like Rogaine and Propecia.

We offer treatments such as Boosted Intramuscular Biotin injections monthly as well as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, which help to decrease hair shedding and regrow hair.

YOUR PERSONALIZED CONSULTATION

During your personalized consultation at Metropolis Dermatology, you and Dr. Wang will discuss your concerns about your hair loss. He will examine the areas in which hair loss is occurring in order to gain a better understanding of the potential cause.
